Every 30 seconds a bicycle is stolen in North America, no that’s not a typo. While our theft rate on bicycles is very low comparative to the rest of the region, it makes sense to take additional preventive measures to protect your investment to deter theft and provide the best chance your bicycle will be returned if stolen or missing.

The Milwaukie Police Department has partnered with Project 529 for bicycle registration resources and extend the benefits to our citizen bicyclists. The registration process is simple and is best completed from a smartphone application available from Project 529. Some benefits to registering your bicycle include; Centralized information storage of bicycle details, Easy reporting to the Project 529 website and smartphone application of bicycle theft, and nationwide access of Law Enforcement and the general public to stolen bicycle reports on the Project 529 website and smartphone application.

Once the bicycle is registered; only participating Law Enforcement agencies can view your bicycle’s registration details. If the bicycle becomes missing or stolen and the user activates a stolen bike report on the app, the basic information and photos are visible for the general public to view creating a giant audience on the street looking for your bike! Follow the links below to register your bike for free.

Milwaukie Residents who would like to have an Officer register their bike with Project 529 may do so by emailing inmanm@milwaukieoregon.gov or calling 503-786-7400, those who choose this option receive the added free protection of a Project 529 decal which has a unique number and is readily recognizable by Law Enforcement as a registry.

Another great local resource for bicycle registry is the Bike Index, https://bikeindex.org/. Many Bicyclists register their bike with both entities. Bike Index is also a partner of the Milwaukie Police Department and a trusted resource.
