Jan. 15, 2020: With the new improvements to Main Street, some elements of the street have changed over the last year. One of the main goals of the South Downtown project was to enhance sidewalks, roadway, including storm water quality facilities to treat pollution, and parking in compliance with Milwaukie Municipal Code (MMC) and Americans with Disability Act (ADA) regulations. The location of the accessible parking spots were thoughtfully considered. Staff examined all accessible parking spots within the South Downtown area to increase access to all businesses in the vicinity. The two spots located on the east side of Main, just south of the intersection at Washington and Main, were selected due to the next closest accessible parking spot located on Jackson Street. The city also added van-accessible parking space on the west side of Main, in South Downtown, directly across the street from the post office. This provides three accessible spaces on Main in South Downtown.

Prior to the South Downtown project, accessible parking on Main was not compliant. The update to Main now provides accessible parking with access aisles and ramps, from roadway to sidewalk. It is important to note that accessibility requires more than street markings and signage, in addition it requires proper access aisles, ramps, and other treatments that are necessary for safe and accessible parking. These factors also informed the location of the accessible parking spaces in South Downtown.

The plaza is also constructed with a smooth and non-slip surface that provides an accessible crossing, which is equipped with signs to warn vehicles to yield to pedestrians and bikes, domes, and bollards. The city is evaluating the usage of the new configuration on Main over the next few months and, if needed, may consider changes to the current configuration. Jan. 14, 2020: The Main Street Post Office removed the mail drop boxes from the island due to a safety concern while collecting the mail. The standard mail drop box opens from the back of the box, which can put post office staff in the travel lane on Main Street. Staff are currently working to determine if a custom mail drop box can be installed to create safe operations.

Nov. 21, 2019: A mini festival was held at 11222 SE Main Street to celebrate the recently-completed south down town improvements and plaza. Stay tuned for future happenings.
