City’s Finance Department keeps streak alive, scores two more national awards
For the third year in a row the City of Milwaukie Finance has received national awards for the quality, reader appeal, and accessibility of the two principle financial reports it issues for its citizens.
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has given the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting to the City of Milwaukie for its Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), both reports issued for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013.
A release issued by the GFOA explains the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. The award is valid for a period of one year only. In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, a government unit must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized report whose contents conform to program standards.
The CAFR presents the financial position of the City as of June 30, 2013 and the results of its operations for the previous fiscal year. The PAFR contains similar but scaled back information and is specifically designed to be readily accessible and easily understandable to the general public and other interested parties without a background in public finance.
“Milwaukie is working hard to make a presence in public finance,” Milwaukie Finance Director Casey Camors said. “We strive to provide high quality, transparent and understandable reports to our citizens and these prestigious awards are a reflection of our commitment to this community.”
Milwaukie’s CAFR and PAFR were judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story. Both reports are available on the City website at http://www.milwaukieoregon.gov/finance.
