Lisa Gunion-Rinker Named Volunteer of the Year

Lisa Gunion-Rinker

City Council recently announced the recipient of the 2017 Volunteer of the Year award is Lisa Gunion-Rinker. Other nominees for the award included Ray Bryan, Linda Hedges, Greg Hemer, Julie Tanz, and Yvonne Tyler. This award recognizes a Milwaukie resident who has made a significant contribution to the community during the past year.

Gunion-Rinker was nominated for her work as the Chair of the Milwaukie Parks and Recreation Board (PARB), active membership in the Ardenwald-Johnson Creek Neighborhood District Association (NDA), creator and volunteer at the Davis Graveyard, leader of Ardenwald’s annual plant sale to benefit the development of Balfour Park, co-founder and monthly volunteer with the Friends of Tideman-Johnson Park, among other volunteer work to the benefit of the community.

When asked why she volunteers, Lisa gave credit to her upbringing and how she started volunteering as a child, which continued into adulthood.

“Volunteering is in my DNA, and should be in everyone's DNA,” Gunion-Rinker said. “I believe the more we volunteer our time and engage to make things better for others, the better our neighborhoods will be, our communities will be, our state will be, our country will be, and our world will be. Everyone makes a difference by their choices, and what they choose to do with their time is especially important.”

Gunion-Rinker will be formally recognized at the 2018 Milwaukie Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Thursday, March 29 at Bob’s Red Mill, will have her name engraved on a permanent plaque at City Hall, will be featured in the April edition of the Milwaukie Pilot newsletter, and will be announced as the winner at the Tuesday, April 3 City Council meeting.

Milwaukie City Council created the Volunteer of the Year program in 2012 to recognize community members for their outstanding service. Council selected Ed Zumwalt as the first recipient of the award in 2012, followed by Dion Sheppard in 2013, Alicia Hamilton in 2014, David Aschenbrenner in 2015, and Joel Bergman in 2016.

Nominees can include anyone who resides in Milwaukie or is a member of a non-profit organization or business that serves the Milwaukie community.
