City Councilor Shane Abma

Shane Abma appointed to Council position 3. On February 13, 2024, the Milwaukie City Council appointed Shane Abma to the vacant Council position 3. Abma was sworn-in by Municipal Court Judge Kimberly Graves immediately following the appointment by Council.  Abma previously served on Council from 2017 to 2019. 

Council Position 3 Vacated. On Jan. 2, 2024, Council President Desi Nicodemus resigned from City Council Position 3. Councilor Nicodemus was elected to position 3 in November 2020 and the position's current term, which started on Jan. 1, 2021, will end on Dec. 31, 2024. As called for by the city charter, two processes are underway to fill the vacant Council position. 

Special Election. On Jan. 16, Council adopted Resolution 4-2024 acknowledging the vacant position and calling for a special election to fill the position through the end of the current term, ending in December 2024. The special election will be held on May 21, 2024, and the elected individual is expected to be be sworn-in at the June 18, 2024, Council regular session meeting. Interim Council Member. Also on January 16, Council approved a process to recruit, interview, and appoint an interim Council member. As called for by the city charter, Council may appoint a qualified individual to fill a vacant Council position until the results of the special election are certified. It is anticipated that Shane Abma, who was appointed to the position on February 13, will serve on Council until June 18, when the results of the special election are likely to be certified.
